In the 1970’s, you were super trendy if your kitchen was decorated in order to blind any normally constituted human being! It was almost impossible to find a kitchen without chartreuse, guacamole or even squash yellow colored appliances. Quite the opposite, we have now developed a fondness for simple appliances and for brushed stainless steel that give a colder and lifeless ambiance to our kitchens. But here comes the manufacturer Smeg who has already gotten us used to color with its refrigerators, washers, and dishwashers largely inspired by the 1950’s (read the article called Smeg-a retro style, an ultramodern technology), recurs with its two products that will soon relegate stainless steel exteriors to the rank of ancient history!
Let’s start by a refrigerator model that turns out to be an excellent example of contemporary simplicity however eliminating all form of monotony and that will surely become THE type of appliance to own shortly. The FPD34, offered in pastel blue, royal blue, cream, dark yellow, or red looks more like a closet than a refrigerator! Designed by an architect, this combined refrigerator-freezer model of a slender appearance and of a width of 60cm can easily be adapted to small rooms. Its total capacity of 351 litres is big enough to amply store food and drink supplies. Ranked A+ in Europe on the energetic efficiency front, this refrigerator will make you save on your electricity bill on the long run. Even though its main interest is that its look differs from the competition, this model has many key characteristics: its two compressor refrigeration compartment, its 18/10 stainless steel interior, its independent refrigeration and freezing controls with a LED display, its super freezing option, its audio alarm, as well as its 4 wheels, 2 of which are adjustable at the back.
As for the refrigerator part of 231 litres, it has an automatic defroster, three neon lighting, 4 glass shelves, 3 of which are adjustable, a chromed wine support, fruit and vegetable compartments and some storing spaces inside the door. The freezer isn’t in rest because it is equipped with a chromed pizza or shallow ice cube tray that is easily removable, as well as 2 chromed reclining baskets that are also removable.
In short, for about $3500 US, you won’t get any unexpected or even exclusive characteristics, but your kitchen will have a great look! To see all the refrigerator models from the Italian manufacturer Smeg, visit the http://www.smeg.it/international/Fridges.aspx.
Let’s continue with the promising collaboration between the Australian designer Marc Newson (http://www.marc-newson.com/) and Smeg who are working jointly on a whole new stove range that all more colorful than one another. Known for its biomorphic style and its magnificient products often qualified as ergonomical, Newson is the first non-Italian designer to work with this manufacturer.
Apart from its loud colors, the retro aspect of the model integrating the latest technologies confers an image unique to the Smeg signature. Here, the digital tactile controls have been integrated to perfection and the proportions of each of the elements have been carefully studied. Thankfully, a picture is worth a thousand words because at the moment, we know very little on the project that is style at the prototype stage and that has actually been recently presented to the famous Milan furniture market. According to the latest news, you can hope to find the product of this successful collaboration on the market sometime at the end of 2008.
