A red barbecue

There it is, the summer has arrived! The great heat waves are coming; our clothes get lighter, our complexions more tanned, and our meals more festive. With the return of this lovely season, it is also the return of barbecue cooking and its delicious grills. The use of a barbecue is perfect during warm summer days because you avoid heating the house anymore than it should be by not using these heating appliances, such as the cooking plate, the microwave, or the oven to cook. You don’t possess any of these appliances or your barbecue is getting old? Here are a few good tips to help you choose one, just in time for the summer. Just like every important purchase, one must first of all establish his or her needs. You must take into consideration the number of people in the house (are you a couple or do you have a big family?), the space available for the barbecue (do you have a small balcony or a large patio?), the accessories that you will need (lateral stove, number of burners, removable blueprints, etc.) and finally, your budget (the price of a gas barbecue can be between $100 and $3500).

The use that you have of your barbecue can also help you choose a model that suits you. If you use it only a few times a year to cook hotdogs and hamburgers during a family corncob party, a basic model will surely be suitable for you. One can find a good basic barbecue that is very acceptable for $200 and one that is very well equipped for $350. However, if you are an unconditional lover of this barbecue and that you use it from the start of the thawing of the snow until the rainy days of November, it is probably worth investing in an appliance of a better quality. One can find many good finds at specialised merchants for around $600. Apart from the elements mentioned before, here are four criteria one needs to consider when purchasing a barbecue and this, independently from your budget or your needs.

  • Barbecue Coleman Backyard Select, 3 burners, 349,99$

The number and the shape of the burners

Most entrance range barbecues have just one burner. When this is the case, it is important to verify that the burner covers the greatest surface possible of the barbecue’s tank. The heat will be spread out more equally. In order to do this, it is preferable to privilege stainless steel burners shaped in an 8 or in an H. However, a barbecue that only has one burner also has just one setting button, which can make the cooking control difficult. Barbecues of a higher range have two burners that can be controlled independently, which means that one can cook many kinds of foods perfectly at the same time.

Stones or not, ceramic or volcanic?

In the new barbecue models, manufacturers have replaced stones with a heat diffuser. This new method needs less maintenance and produces a lot less blazes. However, most barbecue models still use stones. If this is the case, you will have to plan to change the stones every year to not cook the residues of last season again. These new ceramic stones which are more efficient than volcanic stones cost less than $10.

BTU power

Contrarily to what one might believe, BTU (British thermal units) are not directly an indication of the cooking power, but they indicate the barbecue’s gas consumption. Barbecues of a good quality have a low BTU consumption, and so a low gas consumption, that can grill foods more efficiently and economically. Moreover, when there is a surplus of power, this can affect the barbecue’s burners and thus reduce its longevity. It is preferable to choose a barbecue with a BTU power that is proportional to its cooking surface. To know if the offered BTU power of a barbecue is optimal, the calculation is simple: you need to divide the power in BTU, by the cooking surface in square inches. The ideal proportion is between 110 and 116 BTU per square inch. For example, a barbecue with a surface of 400 square inches, a surface that would be perfect to prepare a full meal for 7 to 8 people, should have a BTU power of 45 000.

A good and solid fabrication

A sign of the quality of a barbecue is its robustness and its solidity. An entrance range barbecue will be less stable and less solid, which can eventually cause security problems. In order to make sure you are purchasing a product of a good quality, it is important to make sure that the feet of the chosen barbecue are robust and that its wheels make the moving of your appliance easy. The cooking grills are generally in iron. However, the best grills are the ones made in cast iron, in stainless steel or in aluminum and enamelled font.

If your budget is limited, it is preferable to privilege a barbecue with a good quality for the materials and the assembly, and this, to the detriment of all the accessories that can be offered to you.
