Womman changing a hood's filter

When you have a hood, you obviously wish that its strength is sufficient to free the air of all unpleasant odours and of all smoke that could pollute your household. To regularly maintain your hood is thus essential not only to keep a maximum level of efficiency but also to guaranty an optimal hygiene and security to the whole family. These past years, the manufacturers have made notable progresses, thus simplifying the task of keeping up the filters; another reason to skimp.

Firstly, one must know that the cleaning or the filter replacement frequency will depend on your culinary habits: steam cooking or frying fan, restoration, frequent family dinners... You notice a drop of efficiency of your appliance? It is then time to proceed to its up-keep. It is good to know that generally, you will need to clean the metallic filters every 2 months and you should replace the coal filters every 4 months. To avoid oversights, simply note the date at which you did the upkeep of your hood. Certain hoods inform you, via a witness or a change of colour of the filter that it is time to clean them. To carry out all the operations, make sure to cut out the feed of the appliance and put on a pair of gloves; it will avoid getting yourself dirty!

Body of the hood

Today, you can find many surface types which make hoods more aesthetic: painted sheet metal, glass, stainless steel... Clean the grease particles that could have accumulated about once a month with a soft sponge and a simple degreasing product. However, the stainless steel requires the use of a specific product to keep the sparkle of the material. Mostly, don’t use an abrasive sponge or a brush with rough hairs that could alter the surface’s finish.

Metallic grease filter, micro-mèche or à chicane

Present on the evacuation and recycling hoods, this type of filter doesn’t need to be replaced unless it is broken. You just need to use an ordinary degreaser (avoid using a liquid soap). Clean it by hand or in the dishwasher (in a vertical position as much as possible). If necessary, avoid all contact with dirty dishes or silverware. If you choose to hand-wash it, let the filters soak in hot water with liquid soap, then brush them and rinse them thoroughly. In any case, dry the filters completely before putting them back into place.

Coal filter

If your hood is equipped of a coal filter with an air return in the room instead of an exterior evacuation, you should replace the filter when the air that will come out of it will smell bad. This type of filter can’t be cleaned, but it doesn’t present any harmful component, so you will be able to dispose of it easily by putting it in the trash. The reference of the filter that suits your hood is noted on its descriptive plate.

Good cleaning!
