The modern kitchen is certainly the most multifunctional room of the house. Used as an exchange place with family at the beginning or at the end of the day, a place to help children with their homework, a space to have a drink with friends and of course to make meals. If the multifunction concept is interesting because it creates opportunities to exchange with others, a kitchen that wouldn’t have been designed in this spirit can quickly become inadequate because it doesn’t fulfil the principal function of the kitchen, which consists of a cooking space. So, whether you are ready to renovate your kitchen or not, there are practical and easy solutions so you can reclaim your own kitchen and make it more functional for cooking and storing.
If you don’t plan to do any renovation work, the most important things are to sort and reorganise in order to maximise the space. Get rid of anything broken, what you have in double, and of what you don’t use. For example, plastic containers that don’t have lids, recipe books you have never opened, a turkey spit that you use once a year. There is no harm in preparing one or two boxes full of objects that you use only a few times a year and to place them elsewhere in the house. Just indicate on each box what they contain in order to find what you’re looking for easier.

Once the great clearing is done, you must proceed to the reorganisation of the space. You firstly have to place just the objects you use the most on the counter and place them where they will be most used. Many objects, such as an electric can-opener or a roll of paper towels, can be placed inside cupboards to gain space. You then must replace objects by category in the cupboards, and place them so you can see them at a glance.
Also keep a small stool in the kitchen at arm’s length so you can easily access all your storing spaces, even those very high up. Finally, there is no harm in reserving a drawer in which you can put various objects that don’t necessarily have a connection with the kitchen, such as pens and paper, a place to put the mail or even a deck of cards. Because after all, the kitchen remains a privileged meeting place for the whole family!
If you have already planned changes in the kitchen, there are certain details to which you can pay attention to in order to maximise the storing space and the organisation of this room. For example, privilege deeper drawers than very deep cupboards. This way, as they are on a slide, you will profit of the space better. You can also integrate turning shelves to the corner cupboards to have an easy access to its content. Do not neglect narrow or irregular spaces. Equipped with retractable shelves, they will make excellent storing spaces for spices or for kitchen utensils. Also choose shelves adjustable in height in your cupboards. This way, you will adjust your storing space depending on your needs throughout time. Finally, plan the integration of the recycling bin and of the trash can inside the cupboards. You will thus avoid the clutter up the kitchen floor and to break its aestheticism.
