Opt for peace of mind and a professional moving company or opt for savings and a truck rental, no matter what your decision is, you will still have to prepare your appliances to move!

Very simple precautions

Firstly, it is important to clean your appliances well, but even more to dry them perfectly on the inside and the outside to avoid any mold formation. In order to do this, make sure to turn them off and unplug them beforehand.

The refrigerator:

  • Don’t buy too many supplies the weeks before your move because you will eventually have to throw out all the perishable foods when that day comes.
  • The shelves and the grids inside must be fixed with adhesive tape or dismantled and packed apart.
  • Verify that the doors won’t open during the transport.
  • Clean the capacitator or the compressor with a vacuum cleaner.
  • Attach the electrical wires at the back of the appliance with adhesive tape.
  • If you refrigerator has an ice machine, disconnect the water feed and empty the reservoir. Once the refrigerator is unplugged in your new household, throw out the first batch of ice cubes in order to make sure that you don’t use ice with impurities or residues.
  • The purchase of a product made to be kept in the refrigerator away from humidity of any unpleasant odour during the move is to your discretion. This kind of product is usually available in warehouse stores.

The transport of refrigerators should usually be vertical because they generally work with a compressor whose lubrication is assured by an oil bath. You should make sure that this viscous oil doesn’t infiltrate in the refrigerating gas circuit. That is why it is safe to let the appliance rest a minimum of two hours before plugging it in again after such transport. However, if it is impossible to transport it vertically, lay the appliance on its right side (when facing it) because the compressor’s exit pipe is located on the left side.

The dishwasher and the washing machine:

  • Unplug and empty the piping.
  • Leave the door open a few days before the move.
  • Wrap the dry pipes in a towel and put them inside the appliance.
  • Secure the washing machine’s drum by using the device present on your appliance when you bought it or by following the manufacturer’s directives. In the case where you wouldn’t have these elements available to you, you can buy a kit especially made for that which has instructions to this effect.

The stove:

  • Detach all removable elements and wrap them separately.

One last piece of advice to finish off, movers quite like starting by appliances so on the eve of the move, place them so that they can be loaded in the truck first.

Good luck!
